So l am working on the ImPORTRAITS project for more than a year now and so far no one seemed to care about the project or the refugees stories. With personal work usually it always the same. You think your work is good (otherwise you wouldn't do it right?) but around you no really cares what you are doing. From time to time I wrote to local newspapers if they would do a little blog post or article on the project. Not that I thought its such an awesome project that everyone had to know about it but I thought..hey..if they publish half naked girls with nice cars too why not give it a try.
Seems like people prefer half naked girls instead of fully dressed refugees since they didn't even bother replying to my emails.
So one day, about two weeks ago I was surfing on vice.com and thought..hey..maybe they want to share it? Quickly wrote an email and few days later I got an email from the photo editor that they will send it to the people from Vice Switzerland. Again some time later I was on the phone with a really nice guys from Vice Switzerland and he told me that they are doing a short feature on the swiss Vice website on my project. I thought..VICE.COM !...awesome!
So they did this really nice article on my project and I was really proud and happy that someone wrote about it. A day or two later I found the article on Vice Germany..very cool I thought...and from there it went ballistics. Its on approx. 90% of all Vice.com pages worldwide and hourly I get emails with press requests from all around the world. I got request from India, France, Russia, Hungary, Serbia, Italy, USA, Belgium, Romania and many more. They have written about it on photographers websites, newspages, the Huffington post and even talked about it in a french radio show. Even ASHTON KUTCHER (!) shared it on his personal Facebook account and I got a contract with one of the worlds leading press agencies!
How awesome is that? The Facebook posts have been liked a couple thousand times and a few hundred comments have been posted. There were some negative ones but thats normal and not everyone has to like the project or refugees. I am totally OK with that.
Its everywhere around the world but guess where not...SWITZERLAND...the home of the project.
But I guess thats normal. Switzerland is always a bit behind and sometimes I see articles in newspapers that I have seen months ago on another website. Or they just don't care about it.
We will see it in a couple months.
